New Delhi: A recent study by a pharma company International Day of Evaluation of Abdominal Obesity (IDEA) in around 60 countries concludes that almost 75 per cent Indian women and 58 per cent Indian men suffer from abdominal obesity.
The Indian coordinator for this study Dr Anoop Misra of Fortis Healthcare believes that the real cause for concern is that approximately six out of 10 such cases are likely to develop into serious health conditions such as diabetes.
“The most important contributors are abdominal obesity and fat in the liver. Both are genetically determined. Interestingly Indian babies, which are born low birth fate, have high body fat, high fat under the skin and have a lot of metabolic problems starting at the birth which later on will develop into major and deadly diseases,” says Misra
To add to that genetic predisposition is a sedentary lifestyle, excess fat, alcohol and calorie intake and a low fiber intake - factors that could put you on a high-risk for heart ailments and liver cirrhosis.
So even if your weight is normal, doctors say that it would help to calculate your waist to hip ratio, which you can do by checking your waist circumference. For men it should be less than 90 and for women it should be less than 80. This will help check any complications that might arise due to abdominal obesity.
