Tigers seek Tamil Nadu support for Eelam

Monday, November 27, 2006 (Colombo):LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran on Monday sought support from Tamil Nadu for his renewed campaign to carve out a separate Tamil homeland.

The elusive leader of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, while calling for international recognition for his movement, urged Tamils abroad to support his campaign making it clear that he had abandoned the Norwegian-brokered peace efforts.

"The uncompromising stance of Sinhala chauvinism has left us with no other option but an independent state for the people of Tamil Eelam," Prabhakaran, who was delivering his annual Heroes' Day message, said.

"We express our gratitude to the Tamil Nadu people and leaders for voicing their support and ask them to continue their efforts to help us in our freedom struggle," he said.

We express our gratitude to the Tamil Diaspora, our displaced brethren living all around the world, for their contribution to our struggle and ask them to maintain their unwavering participation and support," he said.

Prabhakaran asked the international community, which has been pressing both sides to cease the violence that has wracked the island since December and engage in peace talks, to recognize LTTE struggle for independence.

"We therefore ask the international community and the countries of the world that respect justice to recognize our freedom struggle," he said.

He said the Tamils were recommencing their journey on the path of freedom.

His speech is seen as a declaration of war and end to six years of peace efforts by Norway although there was no formal reaction from Oslo to the much-awaited annual statement. (PTI)
