Russian eves favourite for boxing title

New Delhi: The fourth World Women's Boxing Championship is being held in India for the first time and around 180 contestants from 32 countries are vying for top honours.

Russia, winner of the overall championships last time, is candidate No 1 for the top prize. The only boxer who has come closest to defeating one of the Russians so far is Xiuting Niu of China.

Russia's biggest competitor is Canada whose strength lies in teamwork even in an event that is geared towards individual performance.

"I think team spirit like cheering for others and all the players together in the gym is wonderful It is like a little family," a Canadian boxer says.

Russia and Canada definitely look like the teams that might win the top honours in the championship this year. But North Korea and India are the two other nations that have been performing well.

The Indian team had clinched bronze last time around and looks good on their home ground. The excitement as Sarita Devi took on Sumeyra Kaya from Turkey and beat her tells its own story.

“Marykom, Sarita Devi, Chhotu are some of the girls who are performing very well. Marykom has won medals also," the Indian coach says.

North Korea seems to be the surprise package of the championships winning most of their bouts so far.

And teams like Turkey, China and Hungary are also in the running for medals.
