Sunday, July 23, 2006 (Kolkata):
A school in West Bengal has dismissed a six-year old student because his father was found to be HIV positive.
Though the boy, Sourav is not HIV positive, the school in West Midnapore district says it wants a confirmation certificate to retain him.
"We need to know whether he is HIV positive for the safety of other students in our school," said Secretary Manoranjan Gupta of Nabakumar Shishu Shiksha Niketan.
The boy's father rejected the demand, but legally the school has no right to demand a certification.
Local government authorities have told the school to take the boy back, but after the ordeal, Sourav's parents plan to send him to another school.
