Hackers rip-off Custom's Rs 80 mn

New Delhi July 23, 2006: Hackers have done away with Rs 80 million, the Delhi customs department claimed Saturday. Preliminary investigations have revealed that some people had fraudulently accessed the computers of the department and transferred out the money, said a customs official here.

The hackers had accessed the protected passwords of some officers with authority to "sanction drawback amount and transfer money in exporters' account electronically", a statement from the department said.

Prima facie, the case was found to be in violation of the Indian Penal Code, IT Act and Customs Act 1962, the statement added.

The Delhi customs had sent an intelligence and preliminary enquiry report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It has also lodged a complaint with the CBI on July 19.

However, they did not name any exporters in the statement.

Acting upon the complaint, the CBI raided 30 places in Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur in close coordination with customs.
