Parliament shuts down over 'Q' issue



New Delhi: Parliament was adjourned till 1400 hours IST on Thursday after the Opposition disrupted proceeding over Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, whom the government is trying to extradite from Argentina in the Rs 64-crore Bofors kickback case.

The Opposition wanted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to give a statement on what his government doing to bring Quattrocchi, who is out on bail in Argentina, to India.

In the Lok Sabha, BJP leader V K Malhotra demanded a statement from the PM and soon other Opposition members started shouting slogans against the Government. Speaker Somnath Chatterjee first adjourned the House for half an hour at 1105 hourst IST and then again till 1400 hours IST.

As soon as the Rajya Sabha met, BJP members led by former union ministers Sushma Swaraj and Yashwant Singh alleged that the Government was trying to hush up the affair.

Opposition members wanted the PM, who was present in the House, to make a statement. Manmohan had on Tuesday said the "government had done nothing wrong" and Quattrocchi would be extradited.

A two-member Central Bureau of Investigation team is now in Argentina to apply for Quattrochi's extradition. The county’s officials say it would take them at least 15 days to process India's request.
