New Delhi:Indian captain Rahul Dravid has said that though Australia will start as favourites for the World Cup, other teams were closing in on them.
Speaking to Dr Prannoy Roy in an exclusive interview, Dravid said, "I think they'll be eight teams that will be looking to be in that final. I think Australia will start as favourites but not by much - that gap is closing. It will be tight and anything can happen. It's going to be a close and tough World Cup."
The skipper said the competition in the Caribbean will be more level than the last two World Cups.
"It will come down to performance in the end. Some teams will perform and take it away from the other teams. I hope India is one of those teams," he said.
Asked about Sourav Ganguly's strong comeback, Dravid said, "We are happy that he's come back and that he is playing well. At the end of the day the team wants players who are playing well and performing well."
The skipper said Ganguly was also a good friend off the field and that the two of them had spent a lot of time together along with Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble.
"We're not a gang. We don't have to spend every waking hour with each other, but we've had good times and spend some tough times together," he said.
Dravid said Ganguly deserved all the credit for coming out of the bad patch.
"The credit for going through it and coming out of it goes to him. He's worked hard. He's looking leaner, meaner and fitter and he's playing well."
The skipper said Ganguly had also been fielding well and the team hoped that he could keep it going in the World Cup.
