Mumbai: After the police claimed to have arrested the alleged beer can killer who has 'confessed' to 45 murders, there seems to be a new attacker on the prowl in the city.
This time though, the victim was fortunate enough and managed to survive the brutal assault on him. Twenty-year-old Raju Gupta is now recuperating in Nair hospital in the city.
Raju was stabbed several times by a sharp weapon on the the railway tracks between Grant Road and Mumbai Central. He is now in ICU after being operated upon on Friday morning.
Says the Deputy Dean of Nair Hospital, M H Shah, "He has suffered injuries on on the hand, chest and the back of his neck. He will be unconscious for at least another 72 hours."
This is the second incident of assault in the city in the last one week - ironically after the police claim to have caught the killer and also claim that he confessed to his crimes.
The police are hopeful that Raju will help them track down the attacker. Says investigating officer, J B Ladke, "This is the first time that a victim has survived. This will sure help us track down the killer."
So how did Raju reach the ill-fated spot?
Raju came to Mumbai only five days ago in search of a job.
He was caught travelling ticketless and sent to Byculla jail and was released on Thursday.
He met the accused on CST station at 1800 hrs IST on Thursday.
The accused offered him food, and after eating both of them went to sleep on an isolated spot between Mumbai Central and Grand Road.
At midnight the accused attacked Raju, but Raju managed to escape, despite being badly wounded
The police are now say that there is a similar pattern emerging in all the murders committed.
Says Ladke, "In the previous murders also, the killer used to offer sacks to his victims to sleep."
It now seems that much to the discomfort of the Mumbai Police, Ravindra Kantrule - the alleged serial killer - may not be the real criminal after all. He may be the wrong man or there may be other players involved.
However, this incident is sure to be the turning point in the mystery of Mumbai's serial killer.
