Students hit by Maharashtra power crisis

Mumbai:As Maharashtra battles a worsening power crisis, caught in its midst are students who are gearing up for their exams.

With sudden blackouts and no immediate relief in sight, they are sweating it out and literally burning the midnight oil as they study in candlelight.

For instance, students like 15-year-old Anushree Ramade, studying for her class X Board exams, spend around eight hours in darkness adding to the exam pressure.

With not enough time to charge the emergency light, Anushree is relying on the good old candle, while the family considers buying a battery-operated inverter.

"There is hardly any time for our exams now. This constant load shedding is putting a lot of pressure on us. It also affects our concentration," said Anushree Ramade, Student.

Studying on street

But while students in faraway suburbs struggle with frequent power cuts, Mumbai's streets are about an altogether different struggle.

For instance, Raj Ghumre and his friends are among the students who have made the streets their home for the exams and the street lights their guiding light.

"I failed in class X. It's after that that I started coming here. I'm now studying for my third year BA. I secured a first class in my second year without going to college," said Raj Ghumre, Student.

Raj is a regular at what is called Abhyas Gulli, i.e., the street to study on.

His one-room home in Worli is barely enough for his family of six to live in, and despite the dim light, the street provides the perfect space to concentrate.

"There is too much of noise at home, how can anyone concentrate in a 8X10 feet tenement. Besides if there are any queries, I can always ask my friends here," said Ajit Yadav, Student.

Ajit and Anushree present two different ends of the same spectrum, joined together by exam stress.

For one, the stress is compounded by the sudden darkness, while the other is so used to it that he finds light where there's little.
