Bangalore: Four-year-old Manjunath was mauled to death by stray dogs on Wednesday evening in Bangalore’s BEML layout while playing with friends near his house.
This is no the first incident, just three months ago, nine-year-old Sridevi, a daughter of a daily labourer was also a victim of the deadly stray dog menace.
The residents clearly have reason to feel scared, angry and helpless.
This is a terrible, there are too many dogs here. They took 15 dogs and went yesterday and today they brought the dogs back,” said an eyewitness, Chandrashekhar.
The Health Minister R Ashok was prompt in announcing a compensation package of 1 lakh rupees for the victim's family.
"We are going to catch 600 stray dogs everyday,” said Ashok.
However, animal rights activists argue that this may not be the ideal solution.
"There are too many illegal meat shops here and unless this problem is solved there can be no solution to this problem,” said trustee, Animal Rights Fund, Dilip Bafna.
There are approximately 70,000 stray dogs in the city and eliminating all of them may not be the solution to the dog menace.
Attendant problems including illegal meat shops also need to be dealt with by the municipal authorities otherwise it may just be a case of barking up the wrong tree
