Australian women's cricket team wins easily

Chennai: Despite a few butter-fingered moments upfront, the Australians fielded and bowled brilliantly, and followed it up by crisp hitting to beat New Zealand by six-wickets in the final of the ICC women's quadrangular cricket series, at the MA Chidambaram stadium, on Monday.

India lost its third-and-fourth-place match to England by six wickets, to finish last.

Veteran pace bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick castled Maria Fahey in the first over after New Zealand elected to bat.

Kirsten Pike bowled a frugal spell of three wickets for 21 runs off her 10 overs.

Pike bowled straight and was on a hat-trick after Sarah McGlashan picked the wrong delivery to cut, and Amiee Mason edged one to Jodie Purves. The score then was a precarious 82 for six.

Nicola Browne and Sarah Tsukigawa's 58-run partnership for the seventh wicket halted the collapse for the next 16.2 overs. Both batswomen zeroed in on spinners Sthalekar and Shelley Nitschke to exploit.

The Australian response to a target of 178 was a 120-run partnership for the first wicket. Nitschke avenged Browne's treatment of her bowling by piercing the field for three consecutive fours in the ninth over.

Supported well by Melissa Bulow, the Aussies were eventually eased home by Player of the tournament, Sthalekar, who was awarded for her good all-round performance throughout the tournament.

At IIT-Chemplast, half centuries by Rumeli Dhar and Mithali Raj took India to 219. In response, Sarah and Claire Taylor made it a reasonably simple chase, winning with 3.4 overs to spare.
