Jakarta: At least 49 people are reported killed in an Indonesian plane disaster.
The plane belonging to the national carrier Garuda Airlines burst into flames on landing at Yogyakarta airport on Wednesday.
The plane was completely gutted. Ninety-three passengers have been evacuated.
The airport has been cordoned off. The flight carrying 133 passengers and 7 crew members had come in from Jakarta.
Loss of life
Prime Minister John Howard said up to 10 Australians were aboard the Garuda Indonesia flight that overshot the runway in Yogyakarta and then burst into flames.
Officials said the Australians included diplomatic staff and journalists connected to a visit to Indonesia by Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer, who was not aboard the flight.
"There appears to have been a significant loss of life," Howard said. "There were up to 10 Australians on board and not all of those have been accounted for."
Howard also said he had authorised medical and rescue assistance to be made available immediately.
