CHENNAI: Passengers arriving at the Chennai Central Railway Station can now flag call-taxis through a `no-haggling, no-nonsense' service.
On Friday, call taxi operator Ravi and Brothers - who have been awarded a Southern Railway contract for a call taxi stand - formally launched the service. With this, passengers arriving at Chennai Central can opt to take call-taxis at a tariff of a minimum of Rs.100 for the first six kilometres and Rs.12 for every subsequent km.
The operator has promised to run a system where there would be no altercations between passengers and drivers.
The stand is situated near the Central suburban train station. Passengers will need to inform their destination to the attendants at the call taxi stand. They will then get a receipt with destination information. The fare should be paid only upon reaching the destination.
The tariff for the call-taxis, however, is higher than the regular call-taxis. The regular fare is a minimum of Rs.50 for first 3 kms; and Rs.10 for every subsequent km. Earnest Paul, president of Call Taxi Operators Association, said very soon all call taxis in the city would revise their tariff to Rs.12 per kilometre.
Only recently, the authorities had re-launched the pre-paid autorickshaw stand in Chennai Central. The tariff was fixed at a minimum of Rs.21 for the first two kilometres and Rs.9 for every subsequent km. The call-taxi stand comes as a good option for groups arriving at the Central with large number of luggage.
