Sendur incident: Anbumani blames officials

PUDUCHERRY: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Anbumani on Sunday said that the jeep explosion at Sendur near Tindivanam on Saturday could have been averted if "officials had taken more care."

Speaking to reporters after visiting victims admitted to JIPMER Hospital here, Dr. Anbumani said that the accident happened due to the callousness of the "officials."

"There are rules and regulations on carrying explosive materials but they were not followed in this case. The people, who were in the vehicle, did not know they were carrying such dangerous materials. One person died and two of the men ran away. In foreign countries, such materials are taken in armoured vehicles with warnings stuck all over the vehicle," he said. When asked about increasing compensation for the kin of those died in the accident, the Minister said that PMK founder Ramadoss had asked for an increase in the amount announced by the State Government. Party president G. K. Mani would soon meet Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in this regard.

On AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa's statement that this was an example of the breakdown of law and order, he said it was only an accident.
