Traders protest against Reliance retail chain

CHENNAI: The Koyambedu wholesale market will remain shut on March 23 as traders will go on a fast against business conglomerates entering the retail sector.

Traders' association representatives on Sunday urged the Government to enact legislation against the entry of business conglomerates into the retail sector.

Several hundred traders organised a protest at the Koyambedu market to draw the attention of the Government to problems faced by vegetable and fruit wholesalers and traders owing to the entry of Reliance Retail's chain of fresh food stores. Walmart, Tata and Birla were also entering the organised retail sector and it would affect the livelihood of ordinary people, they said.

Traders claimed that business was down by forty per cent at Koyambedu since the entry of Reliance Retail

The newly formed Koyambedu Complex Protection Committee has the support of traders' associations across Tamil Nadu and they participated in Sunday's protests, said D. Rajasekaran, president.
