New Delhi: Sri Lankan came up with a perfect clinical performance to reach their target comfortably in 45.1 overs to register a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in their Super Eight match in Grenada.
After Sri Lankan bowlers did exceptionally well to restrict the New Zealanders to a reasonable total of 219, the batsmen did their job to perfection to score 222 for 4 to get to home.
The day belonged to the Lankan veterans as Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan did their bit with the ball earlier, and then Sanath Jayasuriya, displayed his characteristic aggressive batting to put the islanders in the drivers seat chasing a small total, before getting out for 64.
Kumar Sangakkara, meanwhile stayed till the end and score 69 odd runs to ensure Lanka victory.
The Black Caps, on the other hand did not have a great day on the field with as many as three drop catches, as even the bowlers failed to do anything extra-ordinary.
And except for a fine century by Scott styris in the first innings, nothing went the Kiwis' way on Thursday.
Jayasuriya, meanwhile set the rhythm by hitting one of his trademark shots past point and hence, set the things rolling and accelerated the run chase.
However, Upul Tharanga failed to pick up the rhythm, even after getting lucky once to have survived a drop catch by Stephen Fleming at a personal score of 8.
He could not take advantage and went after the ball once again off James Franklin and got the thick outside edge that flew to the third-man and Shane Bond took a stunning catch, back-pedalling and then diving backwards jumping into the air.
