WI send Pak packing, win by 54 runs

New Delhi: A brilliant all-round performance by Dwayne Smith saw the West Indies edging out Pakistan by 54 runs in the first match of the ninth edition of the World Cup at the Sabina Park in Kingston (Jamaica).

Contrary to expectation, the match between the two heavyweights of Group D was not a closely fought one with Pakistan letting the West Indies lower order run amok in the last few overs and then their batsmen failed to break the shackles of the host bowlers to succumb to their defeat in 47.2 overs.

Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul Haq had decided to field first on a pitch, which according to him had a bit of juice in it. But despite a good effort by his pacers, Inazamam watched helplessly as the hosts put up a competitive score of 241/9 in 50 overs on the board.

Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Smith were the hero with the bat with the former scoring 63 runs off 70 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes with the latter carting the Pakistani bowlers all over the park as he added a quick-fire 32 off only 15 balls.

Smith's innings included three fours and two sixes and he was the seventh West Indian wicket to fall as he tried to send a Umar Gul delivery out of the ground but the ball fell safely into Inzamam’s hands.

He then came back with the ball to send three Pakistani batsmen back into the pavilion giving only 36 runs in his 10 overs.

The Pakistan run chase never got going with the Windies bowlers keeping a tight line and length. They were also helped by the tendency of the Pakistanis to play their shots without getting set with Imran Nazir and Younis Khan being the main culprits.

Nazir and Mohammad Hafeez began the chase with the former sending the second ball of the innings out of the ground for a six but failed to last longer and was was caught behind the next ball by Denesh Ramdin off Daren Powell.
