Mumbai:The Income Tax department on Thursday swooped down on over 50 professional service providers in Mumbai and on hundreds of others in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Kanpur in an attempt to unearth black money on the eve of the Union Budget 2007.
According to reports reaching here, there have been over 500 tax raids on stockbrokers, builders, doctors and other professionals across India. The raids began early in the morning and were still continuing when reports last came in.
The premises of many interior decorators, advertising agencies and service providers have also been searched, PTI quoted Director General (Investigation) S S N Moorthy as saying in Mumbai.
There were also reports of crack down on builders, stock brokers and real estate agents.
According to sources, as many as 40 places were searched in Mumbai alone. Raids are also on in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Chandigarh. There have been no clear details about the exact recoveries made in these raids.
IT department sources said more than 300 officers taking part in what is touted as the biggest tax raid in the current financial year. On Wednesday also, tax officials had raided builders in Mira Road and Bhayandar in neighbouring Thane district.
