New Delhi: Investigators working on the blasts in the Samjhauta Express have got their first break: a passenger who saw two men getting off the running train minutes before the explosions.
Pakistani national Usman Mohammad gave a six-page statement to a magistrate in Panipat and claimed he threw out two unclaimed suitcases kept in his bogey. As many as 68 people died and over 50 were injured in two blasts on the train on Sunday night.
Investigators are finding out whether explosives used in Sunday’s blasts and two pipe bombs recovered in Rajkot in December 2004 and Mumbai's Dongri chawl in May 2003 are similar.
Another important lead they are following is tracking phone calls made from Delhi between 0040 hours IST to 0100 hours IST on Sunday to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Investigators say the transcript of the many calls may give them clues.
The Delhi Police have visited several shops in Old Delhi to find out where the six explosive-packed suitcases recovered from the blast site and timers were purchased from.
Clues lost?
Some vitals clues may have been lost when bogies not affected in the blasts were allowed to leave Siwah village, where the train stopped after the explosions. Experts say the bombers could have been on board.
Two men, who had got into an argument with railway policemen on board the train, were allowed to get off the moving train when it slowed down near Deewana station. Minutes after they got off blasts occurred in two bogies of the train.
