CBI team leaving on February 28

NEW DELHI:A two-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team will leave for Argentina on February 28 with relevant papers and documents to seek the extradition of Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors gun deal scam.

`The CBI will compile all the papers and documents required for proceeding legally in Argentina in the case during the next two days. The entire exercise will be wrapped up by February 27, and the team will leave the next day,'' sources said. The hurry on the part of the CBI in the case is to meet the March 7 deadline to seek the extradition of Mr. Quattrocchi.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has already said his Ministry would provide all help to the CBI in the case. The CBI had sent the papers of extradition to the Ministry through the Department of Personnel and Training.

The authorities detained the 69-year-old Italian businessman on February 6 at the Iguazu International Airport in Argentina on the basis of a Red Corner Notice issued by the Interpol.

The CBI announced Mr. Quattrocchi's detention on February 23, 17 days after his arrest.

Sources in the CBI said there was a delay in announcing the arrest as they had to verify the identity of Mr. Quattrocchi and translate voluminous documents in Spanish provided by the Argentinian authorities.

The CBI is planning to hire a local firm in Argentina to handle the extradition issue.
