Maharashtra’s power-less Sun

Mumbai: It was a harrowing Sunday for many in Maharashtra when most parts of the State including Mumbai and many parts of Konkan, Nashik, Sangli, Kolhapur and Ahmednagar were left without power.

The lights went out in Mumbai as early as noon and power supply was restored only by late Sunday evening.

Several parts of suburban Mumbai including Mulund, Kandivali, Kurla and Andheri also faced power cuts in the day.

According to authorities, the crisis was caused by a technical problem at the 400 Megawatt Parali plant in Maharashtra.

Private companies drawing power from the grid put an extra strain on the system causing it to collapse, causing a consecutive failure of other grids.

Maharashtra is currently facing a power shortage of 5500 MW and urban areas have been already facing power failure for eight to 12 hours.

Rural areas have been facing power cuts for 14 to 17 hours daily.
